Located a few kilometres from the centre of Castel San Pietro Terme, the crypt of the Church of San Lorenzo in Varignana is a true pre-Romanesque gem, unique in its kind due to its particular architectural features.
Inside, there is a fresco dating back to the 15th century. Built with composite materials from the ruins of the ancient Roman city of Claterna, the crypt was restored in 1999 and can now be admired in all its splendour.
Not far away, the Malvezzi Tower is a wonderful example of medieval architecture. The structure, transformed from a military stronghold into a country residence, is still a private residence today and is rarely open to visitors.
The guided tour is part of the exhibition ‘A journey among Villas and Castles’.
Participants are reminded that the tour is in Italian.
