San Lazzaro di Savena

The municipality of San Lazzaro di Savena, with its 32,000 inhabitants, is one of the largest municipalities in the Bologna metropolitan area. Its name comes from the lazar house dating back to the end of the 12th century and from the Savena stream that flows around it and acts as a natural border with Bologna.

From the 15th century, a small village began to form around the church and the hospital and, as the hygienic need for isolation disappeared, the inhabitants continued to grow until the creation of the independent municipality in the Napoleonic era.

The territory of the municipality develops on the plain and close to the first hills of Bologna, up to the Park of Bolognese Chalks, and is crossed by the Via Emilia, the millenary communication route.
