A tourist centre in the Apennines, it stands on the Futa road that connects Bologna to Florence, the historic route of the "Mille Miglia".
The area features prestigious buildings of historical and architectural interest, such as the beautiful Church of San Giacomo and Santa Margherita, a 14th-century building erected by the Augustinians that houses two beautiful 18th-century works.
On the heights of Scanello is the elegant Palazzo Loup (19th century), where Pope Pius VII stayed in 1805, on the way back from the coronation of Napoleon I in Paris.
It is interesting to visit the Astronomical Observatory of the University of Bologna, equipped with observatory facilities that allow observation of the sky with powerful telescopes.
